Explanation of Legal Land Description

Meridians are lines of longitude (they run north/south) based on the Dominion Land Survey. In Alberta, they start at 110° West as the 4th Meridian, which runs north/south along the Alberta-Saskatchewan border. The 5th Meridian is 114° West running north/south near the centre of the province. The 6th Meridian is 118° West running north/south closer to the north-western border

Township lines run east/west with township 1 starting at the Canada/US Border and increasing every 6 miles north. Valid Township values range from 1 to 126.

Range lines run north/south, starting at 1 at each meridian and increasing every 6 miles west from 1 to 30.

Section numbers start at the southeast corner of a Township (6x6 mile cell) and run from 1 to 36.

Advisory Level Definitions
Basins on the Advisory Map are colour-coded to indicate the most severe advisory in effect.
Advisory Ended
A High Streamflow Advisory that has recently ended.
Ice Advisory
Stream levels are expected to change rapidly as the river ice cover is freezing up or breaking up. No major flooding is expected as river levels are expected to remain within bank full. This is a natural process, however ice movement and soving may cause minor flooding in low-lying areas. Anyone situation close to the streams affected is advised to be cautious of rapidly changing water and ice levels.
High Streamflow Advisory
Stream levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly and no major flooding is expected. Minor flooding in low-lying areas is possible. Anyone situated close to the streams affected is advised to be cautious of the rising levels.
Ice Jam Watch
Conditions are favourable for the formation of ice jams, or an ice jam has been reported causing stream levels to rise and approach or exceed bank full. Flooding of areas adjacent to the stream affected or groundwater seepage flooding may occur. Ice jams can obstruct the flow of a river channe. The location and occurrence of ice jams and possible associated flooding are very unpredictable. Anyone situated close to the streams affected is advised to be cautious of rapidly changing water and ice levels and to take appropriate precautionary measures
Flood Watch
Stream levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bankfull. Flooding of areas adjacent to these streams may occur. Anyone situated close to the river is advised to take appropriate precautionary measures.
Ice Jam Warning
A reported ice jam is causing flooding in areas adjacent to the stream affected and is impacting a community and/or infrastructure. Ice jams can obstruct the flow of a river channel. The location and occurrence of the ice jams and possible associated flooding are very unpredictable. Anyone situated close to the streams affected is advised to be cautious of rapidly changing water and ice levels and to take appropriate measures to avoid flood damage.
Flood Warning
Rising stream levels will result in flooding of areas adjacent to the streams affected. Anyone situated close to the river should take appropriate measures to avoid flood damage.
Water Shortage Advisory
Stream flows and/or lake and/or reservoir levels are lower than normal, and are either approaching or are currently below key water management thresholds. Depending on the severity of the conditions, water conservation measures may be recommended, or management actions may be invoked relating to angling, temporary diversion licences, or licenced water withdrawals.

Notice

Notice: Temporary Service Interruption for current Water Data on April 28th & 29th.

Please be advised of planned maintenance on our water data system (WISKI) that will impact the availability of current data on the Alberta River Basins (ARB) website on the following dates:

  • Monday, April 28, 2025: Outage anticipated from 9:00 AM until late afternoon.
  • Tuesday, April 29, 2025: Outage anticipated from 8:00 AM until late evening.

Notice

For each Water Management Area (WMA), the activation of a water shortage advisory is represented by the addition of a purple layer on the website and is a visual indication that low flows are being experienced in water bodies within a WMA. Each water shortage advisory is unique based on the WMA’s attributes related to water supply, flow, risk, and other factors and is typically activated when the following criteria are met:

  • For 7 consecutive days the station shows flow under the corresponding instream objective and
  • The following 7-day forecast from Environment and Climate Change Canada calls for low to minimal precipitation to occur within the WMA
